The ability to see women as whole beings is a continuing challenge in American society. Historically women have been viewed as sexual objects, fetishized and objectified for our body parts and how they play into male sexual fantasies. Despite incremental gains, we as a country are perched on the cusp of a backward slide. The events of this past year have robbed us of power over our bodies and our own personal decision-making. A woman’s very life and free will are considered separate — and secondary — to her ability to bear children. The gap between where women are and where we need to be is only widening.
